Main types of above ground and subsurface INFRASTRUCTURE
Zero Terrain
as an underground economic cluster
In the future, it will be possible to develop Zero Terrain projects not only as hydroelectric energy storage, but as an entire infrastructure that enables the interaction of several sectors and thus strengthens the competitiveness of companies. With the Zero Terrain infrastructure, data centres, underground farms, mines, shelters, gas or other liquid reservoirs and spaces for military purposes can be built underground at low cost.
Why Zero Terrain?
1 / BUILD IT ANYWHERE
Zero Terrain is based on the same idea as traditional pumped hydro storage solutions but with a critical distinction: it creates the necessary height variance and storage underground, eliminating the need for altitude differences on the terrain. No special topography or geology is required – Zero Terrain pumped-hydro can be built anywhere.
2 / LOW ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT AND LAND USE
Zero Terrain plants have a small environmental footprint and little land use; thus, we´re efficient CO2 emission reducers – each MWh generated in PHS plants avoids 450 kg of CO2 emissions.
Moreover, we use a small amount of critical minerals. This reduces dependence on global logistic restrictions.
3 / MODULARITY
Our modular design allows for higher storage capacity at a lower cost than any existing alternative. Power from 500MW to 2000MW. Storage duration (modularity) from 6h to 30h.
4 / MINIMAL WATER USE
High head minimizes water storage volume whilst utilizing a deep lower reservoir minimizing surface impacts.
5 / EASY PERMITTING
Low environmental and social impact reduces the period for licensing and permitting and minimises the risk of rejection.
ZERO TERRAIN – DEVELOPED IN ESTONIA
The Zero Terrain solution was developed in Estonia, using the expertise of the world’s leading engineering companies. Its leaders are experts with extensive experience in the energy sector and a team of top engineers.
Zero Terrain’s first project, Energiasalv, is planned for Paldiski, Estonia. The project has been under development for 15 years, received a building permit, and is scheduled to start in 2025.
